The Forgotten Art of a Jump Rope Workout
Did you know that the amount of calories expended in a
30 minute session of jumping rope might well make it worth
your while to learn about it?
Name one of the best cardiovascular exercise programs that is
cheap and requires one piece of equipment? Of course the
title of this article gives it away, jump rope. I will show
you what techniques to use, what jumping rope does to your
body and a mini workout schedule that you can implement into
your busy life.
Jumping rope is one of the greatest cardiovascular exercises
that you can employ in your arsenal of workouts.
Jump roping is the foundation exercises for a boxer. Of
course most of us are not boxers but we can be in just as
good as shape as the champion of the world. How great would
that be? You can use jumping roping for any type of sport
whether it be for tennis, golf, running, or bicycling.
Insuring that you have the proper environment is important
in order to stay injury free in this type of exercise.
What I mean is that the foundation floor of your jump rope
should not be on concrete, floors laid over concrete or any
hard surfaces where there isn't a give. I know from
personal experience that I've shied away from jump roping to
any length of time because jumping on cement absolute kills
your calves. Make sure that you jump rope on a foundation
that gives even a little bit. The best scenario is to have
a springy wooden floor or carpeted floor but also a thin
exercise mat will work just fine as well.
Jump rope regimen.
When starting out with a jump rope workout I recommend
starting slow. A basic workout routine would be to skip
rope for 3 minutes, then 1 minute of crunches, then do 2
more sets and you're complete. When you can do 30 minutes
of this type workout you know that you have passed the
resistance of no return. Any type of exercise that can
boost your heart rate has got to be good for your health.
Jump roping fits the bill to the tee and is cheap, fun, and
anyone can do it in your spare time.
Equipment needed for jump roping.
Obviously you need a jump rope but make sure you don't get a
cheap rope. You can find a good adjustable rope at most any
sporting good store. Find a rope that is lightweight and
the handles are comfortable to the touch. It's hard to find
a rope that is exactly to your measurements and that's why
you should get an adjustable type rope so that you can fit
it to your size.
Do not jump on concrete. I'm telling you this again, it
will be agony after a while. Concrete does not give but
your legs, ankles and shins certainly will. It's not worth
it so take my advice and find a soft surface to jump rope
on.
Jump rope technique.
This becomes second nature after a while but in the
beginning concentrate on turning the rope with your wrists
and not your hands. Keep your hands still and flex those
wrists while at the same time keeping your back and head
straight and look straight ahead.
One of the attractive things that jump rope does for me is
the melody that goes along with jump roping. There is a
definite beat that goes on when you finally get into the
groove. Remembering school ground songs helps keep the
tempo of jump roping alive and well.
We've concentrated on jump roping to boost our heart rate
and to understand that its one of the greatest cardio
routines that you can get into. It also allows you to cross
train from either your workout in the gym or in your garage
with your free weights. Whatever you do, get started in
doing something for yourself, you will not regret it.
Jump rope is about the easiest and fastest way to get back
into the realm of working out. Start to sweat and bring
back the memories of how you used to be, just don't wait for
the perfect day to get something started.
